General guides to more than one style

  • Online! Citation Styles - Bedford/St. Martin's Press. Citation styles for the total range of online information: Web site, e-mail message, Web discussion forum posting, listserv message, newsgroup, real-time communication, and more. Excellent general guide.

  • Sources: Their Use and Acknowledgment - Dartmouth College. Many examples for citing traditional and electronic publications.

  • Columbia Guide to Online Style: Basic CGOS Style - Examples of Humanities (MLA, Chicago) and Scientific (APA, CBE) styles for major types of electronic publications, including Web sites, online reference sources, and electronic publications from online services. 

Print Style Manuals

They provide detailed information on how to format a bibliography or works cited page and how to format in-text citations. These books are located in the reference section of the library. The most popular style manuals are:

 

APA Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, 2001. (REF BF76.7.P83 2001) Used in the social sciences and education. 

          

Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. Chicago: U. of Chicago Press, 2003. (REF Z253 .U69 2003) Used primarily by writers and editors in preparing a manuscript for publication.

 

MLA MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed. New York: Modern Language Association, 2003. (REF LB2369 .G53 2003) Used in language, literature, and humanities disciplines. 

 

Turabian, Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses and Dissertations,  6th ed. Chicago: U. of Chicago Press, 1996. (REF LB2369 .T8 1996) Used in numerous disciplines by undergraduate students and researchers. This style, based on the essential elements of Chicago Manual above, is commonly referred to as "Turabian."
