Using Expanded Academic
Index Database
Expanded Academic Index contains citations, abstracts, and many
full text articles in the areas of astronomy, religion, law, history,
psychology, humanities, current events, sociology, communications, and the
general sciences.
ACCESS: (If you are off campus, access the database from
this
page.)

Go to
the Easley Library home page
-
Highlight and click
on "Expanded Academic Index"
-
Click on the "start
searching" button for Expanded Academic Index ASAP to search this
index.
SEARCH:
-
Subject guide search (topic search). Limit this to
one or two words. If any additional words needed, use the
Advanced search option.
-
Relevance search (retrieves articles matching words that
occur in the articles with the best matches displayed first).
-
Keyword search (retrieves articles matching words that
occur in the articles themselves displayed from newest to oldest).
-
Advanced
search (retrieves articles using more than one index or logic
operators and, or, not) An advanced search lets you search by key
word, title, date, journal name, text word, subject, author, abstract,
refereed, content, record number.
Example:

Click
on the entry box.
-
Enter one or more
words.
Example: Tara Lipinski
Example: literacy
Example: speech pathology AND children (retrieves items containing all
terms)
Example: anorexia OR bulimia (retrieves items containing either term)
Example: basketball NOT college (retrieves items containing the first
term, but excludes items containing the second term)

Full text: limits to only articles with full-text.
Click on this box to impose or remove this limitation.

Referred (this refers to scholarly articles that are peer-reviewed articles; those which have met high
standards judged by peers in a field)

Date range
(limits articles to those published at times you specify.)
Do
not use hypens when indicating dates.
Examples: 19960816, August 16, 1996 retrieves
articles that appear on August 16, 1996.
before 12/26/98, <12/26/98 retrieves articles written before
December 12, 1998.
since 2/1/99, >2/1/99 retrieves articles written after 2/1/99.
le 1/31/90 retrieves articles on or before 1/31/90

Journals (limits to articles from a specific journal)
HISTORY/DISPLAY:

Select View
to see citations.

Use the down arrow at
the bottom of the screen to scroll down the page
-
Click on any of the
underlined words to view your selection
View text means that the full text of the article is available for
viewing
View text with graphics means that references, text and graphics are
available for viewing
View abstract means that an abstract is available, but full text is not
View extended citation means that just the bibliographic citation is
available

Select Modify to add additional search terms to your query.
-
Use the down and up
arrows on the right-side of the screen to scroll down or up the page
-
Click
on "first page" button, "previous page"
button, "next page" button, or "last page"
button to navigate through the displayed citation list
-
Select "start
over" in the left-hand column to clear the search history.
MARK:
-
After viewing a
selected article from the displayed list, click on the "Back"
or "Forward" arrow at the top of the page to return to
the last citation viewed or to proceed to the next citation in the list.
To list
-
Click on the box to
the left of each citation you wish to mark for printing. This will set
aside selected citations for later action or viewing.
-
Continue through the
citation list until you have marked all citations you wish to print.
Only citations will print using this method. To print full-text
articles, you must print them individually.

Select the "View
Marked List" in the left-hand column when you want to view your
selections.
PRINT:
-
On the left click on
"print."
-
Click on the "print"
button from the tool bar.
-
Click on "ok".
-
You can email
a full-text article to yourself by placing your email address in the
appropriate box. Type the subject of the article or leave it blank to
default the choice to title.
SEARCH STRATEGY:
-
Place
" " around a phrase. Example: "child abuse".
-
Place
a + before words that articles retrieved must match.
Example:
+religion (Will retrieve articles that contain religion.)
-
Place
a - before words that articles retrieved must not contain.
Example: -"pesticide control" (Will retrieve articles that do not contain
the words pesticide control.
-
*
placed after a word will retrieve alternate word endings. Example:
exhort* (Retrieves exhort, exhorts, exhortations, etc.
-
?
retrieves words with exactly one character. Example: psych????y
(Retrieves psychology or psychiatry but not psychotherapy.
-
! retrieves one or no
characters and is best for singular or plurals. Example:
hurricane! (Retrieves hurricane or hurricanes)
