Reference Assistance - If you need assistance with your research or have a reference question, you can contact a reference librarian 24/7. During weekends or holidays, please allow 48 hours for a reply. Librarians can provide brief information over the phone or via email, such as giving advice on effective research strategy, search terms to try, and resources/databases that might be helpful in your research. They can also give you information on interlibrary loan, tutorials, remote access, and answers to many other questions you might have. Call any time and leave a voice mail message 800-872-0175 (ext.269) or email library@bluefield.edu. Every BC student and every faculty member is enrolled in a Blackboard course called Library Instruction. Within that course, you'll find tutorials and research helps as well as any library tests or assignments you might have assigned. Students in the Roanoke area are encouraged to visit the library located at the Roanoke Higher Education Center.

Obtaining Library Materials - We suggest that you obtain books in the following ways:

1. If it is found in the BC Online Catalog, as owned by Easley Library, you may order it from Easley Library as long as it's available. Email Werner Lind to request the book.

2. If you find a title that is not owned by Easley Library or other libraries in our online catalog, it is recommended that you obtain it through interlibrary loan from your local public library due to the transit time involved in filling your request from Easley Library. Academic libraries in your area only provide interlibrary loan for their own students and faculty. If you are unable to obtain the book from a local public library, contact Werner Lind.

3. Easley Library maintains agreements with area and state libraries to facilitate access to needed informational resources. Degree-completion students and faculty are responsible for understanding and abiding by the the policies of these libraries. See the libraries section below for details on these libraries, their policies and the services they offer.

To find out what books Easley Library owns, you must search the online catalog. This catalog is shared with seven other libraries which make up the Holston Associated Libraries. Books in Easley Library are classified by Library of Congress Classification. In addition, you have access for over 52,000 electronic book titles. These are full-text, academic titles which are very useful for research in both OML, Behavioral Science, and Criminal Justice. The books are available from the Off-Campus Database list--NetLibrary.

We suggest that you obtain journal articles in the following ways:

1. If you find a full-text article through databases owned by Easley Library, you may either print it off from the terminal where you are or email the article to yourself if you are unable to print at that location.

2. If you find only a citation for the article you need, you can check our list of periodicals owned by Easley Library. If your title/issue is on the list, email Werner Lind to request the article. Or you can print out that information and take it to your local library to request the article through interlibrary loan. If you are unable to obtain the article from interlibrary loan through your public library, call or email Werner Lind. We will complete the interlibrary loan for you.

Our journal collection includes approximately 200 titles. In addition, we have access to over 9,400 journals online--all full text. The library brochure you received when you began classes details which databases would be useful to you. For example, OML students would want to check Business and Company Resource Center, Lexis-Nexis, Expanded Academic Index. Criminal Justice students would want to use Lexis-Nexis, Expanded Academic Index, and Criminal Justice Periodicals Index. Behavioral Science students will want to use Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, as well as Expanded Academic Index.  These databases can be accessed from your home or office from this page.

Important Note: If you hold a Virginia public library card from anywhere in the state, you can access a number of excellent databases from http://www.finditva.com. Just choose your public library and enter your public library barcode number. You'll have access to databases such as Business and Company Resource Center, Expanded Academic Index, SIRS, Health Resource Center, General Reference Center, and others. Public library cards generally are free so it would be to your advantage to visit your local library to get a card for you--and your family.

Easley Library Web Site - Our web pages contain a great deal of information and links to resources for your research. Please take time to browse through the pages and visit often as we are constantly adding and updating information. Of particular interest would be the How Do I Use This Library?, Subject Internet Guides, How to Cite, Off-Campus Databases, Electronic Books, and Research Process.
