Using Online Catalog

HAL(which stands for Holston Associated Libraries) is the online public access catalog to library materials housed in the following libraries: Appalachian School of Law, Bluefield College, Emory and Henry College, King College, Tazewell Public Library, and  Washington County Public Library. Books in Easley Library are arranged by Library of Congress Classification System.

ACCESS:  Go to Easley Library and click on Online Catalog (HAL)

SEARCH:

  • Click on one of the bold words listed below (best to begin with a Keyword search)
  • Click in the box and type the term/s you want. Then press <Enter>

    Keyword (your best choice for a beginning search) Type a word. It will be retrieved from the title, contents notes, organization name.

     

    Example:  computer crime

    Example: sign*

    (The * truncates the word so that sign, signed, signs, signal will be retrieved.)

     

    Keyword (Combine two terms in the following ways)

     

    Example: anorexia AND adolescents

    (Retrieves materials containing both words; AND narrows a search); in HAL AND is the default setting

     

    Example: rich OR wealthy

    (Retrieves materials containing either word; OR broadens a search)

     

    Example: skaters NOT speed

    (Retrieves materials containing the first word and NOT the second; NOT refines a search)

    Author (Type the last name first, first name)

      Example: Wade, William
      Example: American Library Association

Author/Title (Type the last name first, first name in the author box.  Then the title in the title box)

Example: Bronte, Emily
Example: Wuthering Heights

    Title (Type as much of the title as you know. Eliminate articles a, an, the if they are the first word)

      Example: quantum spirituality
      Example: sun also rises

    Subject (Type the subject as it appears in the Library of Congress Subject Headings list; this is a controlled vocabulary and must match exactly)*

      Example: tornadoes
      Example: social psychology

     Number (Select the type of number you want from the choices given and type your number in the box given)

      LC Call Number example: HA202.A1
      Dewey Number example:  720.1
      Govt Doc Number (Enter the Superintendent of Documents classification number) Example: ED 6/2

DISPLAY FROM ITEMS RETRIEVED:

  • Click on underlined retrieved item to view the record
  • View information in the box to determine location (library ownership) of the item, call number (shelf location) and status. (Check shelves indicates the item should be on the shelf and available for checkout; Duefollowed by a date indicates another patron has the item until the date indicated)
  • Place a hold on checked out items you desire by informing a staff member at the Service counter

PRINT:

  • Click on the "Print" button on the toolbar
  • Click "ok"

Additional Commands

  • Extended display: Enlarges the brief entry; provides more information
  • Start over: Returns you to the main menu
  • Another search: Allows you to perform a different search of the same type
  • Limit this search by:

Where: Click on the down arrow to display institutions. Click on <Bluefield College> to limit retrieved items to those found at Bluefield College

      Material type: Bks, Mags, Newsp; music scores; spoken recordings, videos/slides; Map, Kit, ebooks

      Year of publication: Click in each blank. Example After 1992 before1997

      Language: Click on the down arrow to display choices. Example English

      Words found in: Click on the down arrow to limit items to words found in the author, title or subject

*Using Subject Headings

  • Use the subject option from the HAL online catalog and browse through the subjects listed for your topic.  Let's use AIDS nursing as an example.
     
  • Type AIDS nursing in the subject space and hit <Enter>

    Results:  No matches found; nearby SUBJECTS are:

  • Since no matches are found, you can scroll through the choices to see if nursing appears.  Hit the <Previous> button to see what other subheadings were assigned to Aids Disease.  You will spot the heading Aids Disease--Nursing which you can then click on or
     
  • Since no matches are found, arrow down to where the term aids nursing would fall alphabetically

Click on Search as Words to do a keyword search.

  • Click on any of the relevant titles and arrow down to the Subject area of the entry
  • View the  Subject  AIDS (Disease) -- Nursing. 
  • Click on that subject for additional relevant titles.
  • Check for additional relevant subject headings by examining other related subject headings assigned to books on your topic.  Example:  AIDS (Disease) -- Treatment which you can then use to expand your search.

To limit your search to items in Easley Library, click <Limit this search> and click on Bluefield College.  You can also limit by material type (books, videos, ebooks, etc.).

  • To use the see and see also options, look at another example:
    Midwifery.  Type this word into the subject box and hit <Enter>
  • This note will appear:  Midwifery -- see --Obstetrics   (A see reference takes you from a term that is not used in the catalog to one that is used.)  Click on the underlined words in blue.
  • The displayed results will look like this:

  • Click on <11 related subjects> if you wish to view see also references (additional terms used in the catalog that relate to your chosen term in some way).  Using see also references will help you to narrow, broaden or provide you with related terms.
