Political Science and History, Boston University, and editor of the
seminal collection, What is Enlightenment?: Eighteenth Century Answers
and Twentieth Century Questions), a political theorist and
historian who has specialized recently on the German tradition from the
Enlightenment through Hegel. Schmidt is an expert on reactions to
Jacobinism throughout German speaking countries in the period of the Jena
