Donald
S. Whitcomb (The Oriental Institute; Ph.D. The University of Chicago, 1979)
also participated in all sessions, particularly during weeks 1, 2, and 5. He is
an archaeologist with a special interest in the transition from late antique
(Byzantine-Sasanian)
to early Islamic periods in the archaeological record and in early Islamic urbanism.
His publications include two volumes of excavation reports for the site of Quseir
al-Qadim (Egypt) (1978 and 1982), which he excavated, Before the Roses and
Nightengales:
Excavations at Qasr-i Abu Nasr, Iran (1985), and many articles on archaeology
and urbanism, including those on his excavations of an early Islamic city at
Aqaba,
Jordan. He is currently conducting archaeological research on the early Islamic
site of Hadir Qinnasrin in northern Syria.
