Walter E. Kaegi (Department of History; Ph.D. Harvard,
1965) participated in all sessions, particularly in weeks 1, 2, and 5. He is a
specialist in Byzantine history, with particular interest in Byzantium's Near
Eastern provinces and their loss to the early Muslims, and in military history.
His publications include Byzantium and the Decline of Rome (1968), Byzantine Military
Unrest, 471-843: An Interpretation 1981), Byzantium and the Early Islamic Conquests
(1992), and dozens of scholarly articles on Byzantine history. He is currently
writing a book on Byzantine North Africa.
