Fred M. Donner (Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations; Ph.D. Princeton, 1975),
participated in all sessions. He is an historian who has worked extensively in
the field of early Islamic history and Arabic studies, and whose publications
include The Early Islamic Conquests (1981), Narratives of Islamic Origins: the
Beginnings of Islamic Historical Writing (1998), and many articles on questions
relating to the rise of Islam from the points of view of state institutions, ideology,
and historiography. He also has an interest in the role of pastoral nomads in
Near Eastern societies. He is currently conducting research on Qur'anic eschatology
and the theme of apocalypticism in the early Islamic community.
