WAC at Bluefield College is an attitude, a philosophy, a pedagogy, a practice and a program which acknowledges the key role writing plays in learning. WAC is a concerted effort of faculty from various disciplines to ensure that our students have opportunities to become better writers, thinkers and learners in the classroom and the workplace. The formal WAC program at Bluefield College began in 1994. Then, 1/3 of the faculty participated in a series of workshops designed to help them effectively incorporate writing into their classes. Topics covered included the writing process, writing to learn, designing effective assignments, peer review, and evaluating student writing. Over the next 2 years, most of the remaining faculty also participated in those workshops. Follow-up workshops have since been offered to allow faculty to share new ideas and design new assignments. Currently, with the assistance of the COWL project, faculty are investigating ways to use computers to enhance student writing.
