New COWL Process:

On Wednesday, September 14, 2005 a new system for COWL essays was launched. Instead of using email to send responses to student essays, students will now go to a tracking page and type in their email address and tracking number to view their essay response. This new system, designed by BC's own IT department, grants tutors greater flexibility in responding to student essays via font colors, symbols, and other formatting tools. COWL still provides the same service, just in a new format. The look of our COWL site has changed as well, with a new design for many pages. Instructions for using the new system are posted below.

How to Submit an Essay:

  1. Open up your essay on your word processing program. You must paste your essay on the essay submission form. (For MS Word, you can go under the Edit menu, click on Select All then Copy.  Click on the minimize icon in the top right - the box with the minus sign.)

  2. Open up the Internet.

  3. Go to the COWL website.

  4. Click on SUBMITTING AN ESSAY.

  5. Fill out the form completely. Choose from the options on the drop down list or type in your information in the text boxes. MAKE SURE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IS CORRECT.

  6. Paste your paper into the text box where indicated. (Make sure your cursor is in the text box then go under the Edit menu and click on Paste - your essay should appear in the text box if you used the previous directions for MS Word.) .

  7. Click on SUBMIT only one time. Note that it may take a little time to submit a long essay from off campus.

  8. Write down your essay tracking number, or check your email for your tracking number. You will use this number to retrieve your essay response. When the essay has been completed, you will receive an email stating a tutor has reviewed your essay.

How to Track an Essay:

  1. When your essay has been completed you will receive an email with information on how to retrieve your response. You may also go to the COWL homepage and Click on Tracking Your Essay.

  2. Enter the email address you typed in when you submitted your essay and the tracking number provided after you submitted your essay. This information is also in the emails sent to you from the COWL system.

  3. Click on Submit.

  4. Carefully read an follow the directions on the screen to view your essay.
